NB – This part is not ILCA “class legal” but is Laser “Class compliant” *.

Should you be competing or intending to compete in ILCA sanctioned events then you will need ILCA “Class legal” equipment.

* An overview of “Class compliant” Laser Equipment by Sail and Sport:

Ian Bruce (a sailing Olympian & production engineer) conceived the Laser to be a moderately priced strict one design dinghy racing class where the competition was between the helmspersons & not the equipment.
He was also the man largely responsible for inventing the manufacturing processes working out the tolerances, putting the Laser into production & therefore its success.

In recent years ILCA has rebranded the Laser as the ILCA making changes that have both impacted on the strict one design principle whilst significantly increasing costs.
The majority of club sailors have effectively boycotted this by buying various cheaper equipment which has further impacted on the classes strict one design principle.
However, an increasing number of club sailors seem to be realising what has been lost & are now looking for a return to more strict equipment controls (quality control, or uniformity control if you prefer) together with more moderate prices.

In absence of an effective Laser class association Sail and Sport now markets a range of parts that closely replicate Laser parts enabling sailors to effectively return to the Laser one-design principle & moderate prices.

In time we hope that the majority will decide to voluntarily conform to this so re-establishing the one-design standard which is the biggest asset of the class & one that so many of our sailing clubs rely upon to maintain both class racing & membership numbers.
