Harken XD Vang 18mm “Carbo” secondary block with lines – Laser / ILCA

This is intended for use with the Harken 15:1 Vang system where the Harken 25mm “High strength” block is in use in the  upper assembly.

The Harken XD vang was introduced in 2005 & “refreshed” in 2013 when the originally supplied Harken 16mm “Air” double block with becket was replaced by the Harken 18mm “Carbo” double block as the systems secondary block.

In truth there is very little difference between the two blocks in terms of performance although sailors do have their preferences. However, it is quicker & easier to change the lines on the 16mm “Air” block. This 18mm “Carbo” block with lines pre-attached is intended to make it similarly quick & easy to replace the primary & secondary lines when the 18mm “Carbo” block is used as the vang secondary block.

The primary line, proportionately the highest loaded line on a Laser/ ILCA,  is spliced Dynema D12 for strength & security.

The secondary line, possibly the line subjected to most wear on a Laser/ILCA & of different construction, is knotted for strength & security (knotting also makes changing the secondary line possible with only a knife).

When choosing the primary colour consider that lighter colours are easier to mark than darker colours if using a permanent marker pen.

NB If you are using the Harken vang arrangement with an 18mm “Carbo” secondary block consider carrying this as a spare because both the  secondary & primary lines need to be passed through the hub of the block which is not easy to do especially when in a hurry &/or without suitable tools.
